As a descendant of the famous Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Khatija has carved her own path and made a name for herself in the art world. Born in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory in 1989, the artist was heavily influenced by the works of her grandfather, Clifford Possum, and her mother, Michelle Possum Nungurrayi. When Khatija was nine years old, her mother began painting again, and it was at this time that Khatija fell in love with her mother's work and with painting. By observing and assisting her mother, Khatija learned how to paint. This process highlights the importance of art in maintaining culture, as stories and skills are passed down from one generation to the next.

As a mother herself, it is of great importance to her to preserve her cultural heritage. Khatija currently lives in Adelaide with her partner, John, and their three children.

Seven Sisters - Khatija Possum

The Dreamtime story of the Seven Sisters is retold in this beautiful illustration by artist Khatija Possum.

In the Dreamtime, a group of seven Napaltjarri women were pursued by a Jakamarra man named Jilbi. He sat in a cave at Irlkirdi practicing love magic, cutting off his long hair and weaving it by hand onto a wooden spindle, then performing songs and dances that could be heard from far away. He often seduced young women into coming to his cave and living with him. The Jakamarra men were very proud of their successes when practicing this magic, and spent much time boasting to each other about their skills.

The seven women had no intention of sleeping with the Jakamarra man and ran away from him. They traveled a long way through the desert until they were too tired and hungry to go any further. They settled down at Uluru to look for honey ants, and when they saw Jilbi approaching, they went to a place called Kurlunyalimpa and turned themselves into seven fires.

With the help of the spirits at Uluru, they ascended into the sky and became stars. Since then, they can be seen as a group of seven stars in the constellation of Taurus, known as the Pleiades. Jilbi has turned into the Morning Star in Orion's Belt and continues to chase the Pleiades across the sky.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0990/1627/8343/files/10_4a1ff2f6-9545-492a-af7c-72c2fa7f245a.jpg?v=1785395386
