HEARTLAND WINES. THE TOP WINES OF THE SHOOTING STAR.
Heartland Wines is a joint venture of seven young people who teamed up in 2001 to turn their love for good wines into a joint venture. The name of their newly founded winery, Heartland, already expresses how much the project means to them.
Leading the dedicated team as Chief Winemaker is none other than Ben Glaetzer, scion of the famous Glaetzer winemaking family. The self-assured and determined wine-o-holic has managed to win over not only the national trade press but also wine critic Robert M. Parker.
Parker describes: Ben Glaetzer admirably combines the immense fruit and power of old vines with a surprising degree of elegance and complexity.
Langhorne Creek is Australia's oldest cool-climate region and much cooler than neighboring regions McLaren Vale and Barossa – for a very simple reason: it is located in an old floodplain on the northern shore of Lake Alexandrina. As such, it is very flat and, unlike the regions on the other side of the Mount Lofty Range, is at the mercy of the prevailing winds.
The wind arrives from the Southern Ocean in the early evening, cooling the entire region by about 10°C within an hour. This, in turn, creates cool nights and thus ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Because the wind has such a profound effect on local viticulture, it is affectionately known among winemakers as the Lake Doctor. Incidentally, the oldest registered Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world grow here. This is due to the fortunate circumstance that there has never been a phylloxera infestation here.
