Michelle Possum

Michelle Possum was born at Napperby Station, northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Painting was taught to her by her father, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Clifford is the most well-known painter from the founding group of Papunya artists.

Grandmother's Country Design

The Dreamings that Michelle Possum paints originate from Yuelamu, her home country at Mt Allan. These include the stories of the Seven Sisters Dreaming, bush tucker stories, including Seed Dreaming, bush coconut, Fire Dreaming, Goanna Dreaming and Grandmother's Country, many of which she combines in complex, interwoven designs.

Michelle primarily depicts aerial maps of her family's traditional country and describes the many important cultural sites she knows well. Her paintings have gained great popularity, which is partly due to the fact that the paintings, when we understand the iconography, represent fascinating narratives for a Western audience. They are not only populated with plants, food sources and waterholes, but also with people sitting in the landscape - men with hunting tools and women with digging sticks and coolamons.
