This Limoncello (not Lemoncello) takes itself very seriously. It is made according to a closely guarded recipe – using two different varieties of lemons from South Australia's oldest citrus orchard in Lennane Orchards, Montacute Valley, Adelaide Hills. This citrus orchard is believed to have been established 150 years ago.
Why is this Limoncello so important? The lemons are what you might call "ugly." Yes, they vary in size and look somewhat strange.
Unfortunately, this meant that supermarkets weren't interested in buying them.
After years of trying to sell these ugly little lemons, the growers were planning to remove the 150-year-old trees.
To preserve this historic orchard, Applewood Distillery stepped in and promised to buy the entire harvest to produce this delicious Limoncello.
It's a labor of love. Literally! Applewood Distillery spends 12 hours hand-peeling the orchard's lemons to create this delicious drink.
They even have a family ritual where they take turns peeling a few buckets a day; everyone pitches in!
We believe all lemons are beautiful, and we hope you do too.
