Heartland Wines is a joint venture of seven young people who teamed up in 2001 to turn their passion for fine wines into a shared enterprise. They express just how close the project is to their hearts through the very name of their newly founded winery: Heartland.

At the helm of the dedicated team as Chief Winemaker is none other than Ben Glaetzer, scion of the famous Glaetzer winemaking family. The wine-o-holic, brimming with self-confidence and determination, has managed not only to win over the national trade press but also to attract the attention of wine guru Robert M. Parker.

Parker describes: Ben Glaetzer admirably combines the enormous fruit and power of old vines with a surprising degree of elegance and complexity.

Langhorne Creek is Australia's oldest cool-climate region and is much cooler than the neighboring regions of McLaren Vale and Barossa – for one simple reason: it is located in an old flood plain on the northern shore of Lake Alexandrina. As such, it is completely flat and, unlike the regions on the other side of the Mount Lofty mountain range, is at the mercy of the prevailing winds.

The wind comes from the direction of the Southern Ocean in the early evening and cools the entire region by approximately 10°C within an hour. This in turn creates cool nights and thus establishes ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Because the wind has such a profound effect on local viticulture, it is affectionately called the "Lake Doctor" by the local winegrowers. Incidentally, the oldest registered Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world grow here. This is due to the fortunate circumstance that there has never been an infestation of phylloxera here.
