Would you consider it very likely that the largest potato farmer in the Southern Hemisphere could produce one of Australia's top three wines within five years by hiring a completely unknown winemaker, just because he's friends with him?
But that's exactly what happened. In 1999, Frank Mitolo had had enough of potatoes, sold off part of his empire, invested the proceeds in vineyards in McLaren Vale, and gave his friend Ben Glaetzer, who five years later became Australia's Young Winemaker of the Year, the chance to show what he could do.
Even the first vintages garnered very high ratings – above all the G.A.M. Shiraz. It has everything one could wish for in a top wine. It is impressively opulent, truly profound, wonderfully balanced, invitingly soft, immensely spicy, and fabulously fruity! On the nose, alongside dark, ripe fruits, there are notes of anise, nutmeg, and freshly ground pepper.
On the palate, blueberries, blackberries, and licorice reveal themselves. You can enjoy this wine now or keep it for up to ten years.
The only important thing is to drink it at least once, otherwise you would have missed one of the most astonishing wines in the world!
